taking body measurements

Taking Body Measurements

You will need the following materials:

  • Band of elastic (with buttonholes)
  • Measuring tape
  • Assistant

Please note: Patterns cannot be compared to standard sizes. Therefore, it is very important to measure correctly before you begin. Take your measurements smoothly, but not too tightly, over fitted lingerie. Tie a band of elastic around your waist and leave it in place while measuring. Never take your own measurements; ask for assistance.

Taking Body Measurements

An assistant is needed for this step!

Height: Stand barefoot with your back against a wall, place a book on your head and against the wall. Measure your height from the bottom of the book to the floor.

Chest circumference: Place the tape measure across the fullest part of your bust, under your arms, and towards your back. Measure the chest circumference, make sure the tape measure is horizontal and let your arms hang straight down.

Waist circumference: Place the tape measure over the elastic band and measure the waist circumference.

Hip circumference: Place the tape measure approximately 18 to 20 cm below the waistline and measure the hip circumference across the fullest part of your butt.

Back length: Measure the back length from the lump in your neck down to the elastic band, measure the back length.

Upper arm circumference: Place the tape measure over the fullest part of your arm, measure the upper arm circumference.

Sleeve length incl. shoulder length: Measure from the neckline over the shoulder in one go to 1 cm below the wrist joint, measure the sleeve length incl. shoulder length

Determining your clothing size

Once you've noted your measurements, you can determine your clothing size. The measurements are based the back length, if you have a different height, you can adjust the patterns by shortening or lengthening it at the noted location on the patterns.

Always compare your body measurements with the “Body Measurements” chart, never with the pattern itself. Circle the measurements in the size chart that most closely match your measurements. The circles will usually be in different columns, meaning that different sizes are chosen for different garments, and sometimes the patterns might need to be adjusted slightly for the perfect fit.
If you're less experienced with sewing patterns I recommend going with the size where the waist measurement falls in, unless that's the only lowest value. Adjust your project whilst test fitting before sewing the permanent seams.

Before I can do the next test fitting I need to replace the dull feed dogs of my sewing machine, I noticed some slipping that I dislike. Sadly I have to wait till the new parts come in before I can start sewing in the boning channels.

A little closeup detail while I'm working on replacing the back panels of the corset. These lines actually give the corset more structure asside from being pretty detailed lines. These details are what I enjoy most in sewing and making corsets.

Would you sew a seam 3 times with a 1-2mm marge just to get this stunning look? Or would you skip this step and sew the next construction step instead?
First test fitting of the velvet corset, this will First test fitting of the velvet corset, this will be the base corset for my thistle inspired dress.

The test fitting is without any support from boning, I like to do test fittings before I add the first boning tape.
Luckily I did because the back closed all the way and I had to replace the back panels, in my excitement I forgot to include the back opening in my pattern drafting step. A silly mistake which I now spotted in time.

it's always fun to see how much of an impact good breast support can make.

In my last video I got a lot of questions about th In my last video I got a lot of questions about the large pressing pillow I'm using as a roll pinning guide.
I have had this big boy for about 16 years and it's from the Dutch brand "Wagen".

Although this is not a sponsored post I did some research on where it's currently offered, the webshop @beauty_vof Still offers the big boy pressing pillow as well as the smaller version. This is also the store where I got the polyester velvet mat.
I hope this helps your sewing and ironing experience.

Check an older post if you like to upgrade your ironing station with a new ikea hack.

Since I'm making this corset out of velvet I decid Since I'm making this corset out of velvet I decided to use a tailor technique called "roll pinning", by basting the coutil and velvet layers together over the curve of a large pressing pillow.

This helps to reduce wrinkle lines when the outer fabric layer gets more strain. as simple as this may sound, this is the level of precision in high quality corsetry. At the same time it keeps both layers in place when sewing the slippery velvet.
A slow process but definitely worth the effort.

A little corset WIP, while smokey keeps me company A little corset WIP, while smokey keeps me company.

Does anyone knows a good brand of metal thimbles that offer multiple sizes?
Since I'm working with velvet I'm roll pinning and basting all layers together before I sew the corset.
It takes some extra time but itself quite calming to do, but I do feel my fingers hurt since all thimbles I've got are to small or to big.
